John and Jill were trip
leaders with YMCA Storer Camps outside of Jackson, Michigan.
Together and separately they held leadership roles in numerous Camp sponsored mountain
climbing and hiking expeditions out west.
One of their favorite spots was the Wind
River Mountains in Wyoming. This picture shows that Ewing was in pretty good
shape in the early 1980's. In fact, Ewing has always stayed in top form from his
regular mountain trips. But Judy Coltrain described a large, heavy man who attacked
her. Her police report states that the rapist felt "soft, like someone who
never exercises." This comment was never fully explored with the jury.
Eskridge tried to make a case out of
Ewing's benign encounter with Patti Morris in 1984 by linking him with the man who
attacked Coltrain. But Pattie described Ewing accurately: a "man in good
physical condition."
