On June 20, 1983, 16 year old Judy Coltrain was jogging near her summer home when a man approached from behind, dragged her into a secluded area off the road, pulled her shirt over her face, and raped her.   When finished he told her to "count to 100" before leaving.   Her brief glance resulted in a description of a large heavyset man:  dark short hair, dark mustache, dark sunglasses, tall (over 6') and "felt soft, like someone who doesn't exercise."

The Jury was shown a suspect composite that bared an uncanny resemblance to the defendant, John Ewing.  The sketch was a FORGERY.  The exhibit was so powerful that Prosecutor Joseph Filip referred to it in his final argument as the main reason the jury should convict.

Other miscarriages of justice in the Coltrain case:

bulletThe chain of custody for the physical evidence was broken.
bulletThe physical evidence was destroyed in spite of an order to retain it.
bulletThe complainant was coached into her ID of Ewing.
